Help understanding FBT

17 February 2020

Are you providing benefits to your employees? Are you a bit rusty on knowing when and how fringe benefits tax (FBT) may apply? Our Fringe benefits tax - a guide for employers is your best source when dealing with all things FBT.

The end of the FBT year is fast approaching – 31 March. If you provide benefits to your employees, now is a great time to review the guide to determine if you have FBT obligations. You even have the option to download the guide as a PDF.

The ATO's comprehensive guide will help you to:

  • understand the different types of fringe benefits
  • calculate FBT
  • work out and record reportable fringe benefit amounts
  • know what records to keep
  • identify exempt benefits and when benefits receive concessional treatment.

Remember, you must lodge and pay your FBT return by 21 May unless:

  • you live in an postcode impacted by bushfire - your lodgment is deferred until 28 May 2020
  • we accept a request you make for an extension of time to lodge
  • a registered tax agent lodges your return electronically and meets our lodgment program requirements for FBT.
